Whole Grain
Whole grains contain following elements of the grain:
The fibre rich outer layer The Bran
The middle starchy part Endosperm
The nutrient rich inner part the germ
The fibre rich outer layer The Bran
The outer layer includes several nutrients: like Fibre, B vitamins, Minerals, Protein etc
The middle starchy part Endosperm
The middle layer - and the largest section - serves as the main energy storehouse.
• Carbohydrates
• Proteins
• Small amounts of B vitamins
The nutrient rich inner part the germ
Although the smallest part of the grain, the germ is packed with nutrients and it contains.
Minerals
• B vitamins, Vitamin E, Phytonutrients
When grains are refined, the bran and germ are removed which leave only endosperm.
Most of the nutritional value of the grain wasted because out of all the three layers, the bran and the germ contain the highest concentration of nutrients.
Most of the food now a days in super market shops / malls are refined food which is devoid of most of nutrients i.e. not healthy at all. So next time when you buy your food check if you are buying healthy food.
